Simple Croque Monsieur

We call these fancy ham and grilled cheese. Bread topped with a simple bechamel, prosciutto, ham, gruyere and more bechamel then grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter plus more for the bread

  • 1 tablespoon flour

  • 2/3 cup milk

  • Pinch of nutmeg

  • Pinch of salt

  • 4 slices of bread

  • 4 slices thin gruyere cheese

  • 4 slices prosciutto

  • 2 slices ham

Instructions

  1. Preheat a griddle or sandwich press to medium

  2. To make the bechamel sauce, melt 1 tablespoon butter in a small saucepan, then whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the milk, salt and nutmeg and cook for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.

  3. Butter the outside of each piece of bread. To assemble, spread bechamel bread, top with 2 slices of prosciutto, 1 slice of ham, 2 slices gruyere cheese and more bechamel, then top with the other slice of bread. Griddle the sandwiches for about 5 minutes per side until golden and gooey.

Takes 15 minutes
