Swedish Meatballs

These Swedish Meatballs are the ultimate cozy comfort food in January. These simple spiced meatballs are cooked in a delicious cream sauce and served over egg noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 pound ground pork

  • 3/4 cup heavy cream

  • 1 slice of white bread, crusts removed, torn into pieces

  • 1 egg

  • 1 onion, diced

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 1 egg

  • 2 garlic cloves, grated

  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped

  • 1 pound egg noodles

  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • 1 cup chicken broth

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • Olive oil

  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees and bring a large pot of salted water to boil.

  2. In a small bowl, whisk egg and 1/4 cup heavy cream together add bread and set aside.

  3. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Stir in onion and cook until just starting to brown, about 4 minutes. Add half of the sautéed onions to a large bowl and set aside.

  4. Melt the remaining butter in the skillet and sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Whisk in the broth, cream and a pinch of salt and simmer until the sauce is slightly reduced, about 5 minutes.

  5. To the large bowl with onion, add 2 teaspoons of salt, soaked bread mixture, beef, pork, garlic, pepper, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, allspice, and nutmeg and mix together well.

  6. Roll into 1 inch balls and place them onto a baking sheet. Drizzle the meatballs with oil, then bake for 10 minutes until browned. While the meatballs are browning cook the egg noodles.

  7. Add the meatballs to the sauce along with the lemon juice and cook for another 5 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through. Serve with egg noodles and parsley.
